Binance has reported a major security breach with an estimated financial impact of $6.3 billion, in what could become the largest cryptocurrency heist on record. The world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume said attackers carried out unauthorised transactions and that it was working with law enforcement and blockchain security firms to recover the affected assets.

The incident occurred on October 29, 2026. Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while its security teams investigated the attack. However, the exchange assured customers that their funds remained safe and pledged to cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds.

How the $6.3 Billion Binance Security Breach Happened

Binance’s initial investigation suggests that the attack may have started with a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker allegedly used access from the device to enter a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.

However, the exchange later reported that investigators had uncovered additional points of breach. This suggests the incident involved a more complex attack than the initial findings indicated.

Binance said it had found no evidence that attackers leaked wallet private keys. It also revoked authorisation for the affected address and began working with blockchain intelligence firms to trace the stolen assets.

The exchange said it would publish a detailed technical post-mortem after completing its investigation and verifying the findings.

Binance and Crypto Firms Freeze About $3 Billion

Binance said it had worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets. Several major crypto companies also took action to prevent the funds from moving.

Tether froze nearly $1.57 billion in assets linked to the incident. Circle, the issuer of USDC, froze more than $800 million. Ripple also froze approximately $200 million in potentially affected funds.

These actions prevented a significant portion of the reported stolen assets from moving freely. However, billions of dollars remained outside the confirmed frozen amount as investigators continued tracking the funds.

Binance also said it was working with law enforcement agencies and industry partners to identify the attackers and recover additional assets.

North Korea-Linked Hackers Suspected in Binance Attack

Blockchain intelligence firms have linked the Binance security breach to North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking group.

TRM Labs and Chainalysis said they had high confidence that the group was responsible. Their assessment draws on similarities between the Binance incident and previous attacks associated with North Korean hackers.

Elliptic also identified links between some funds from the incident and addresses associated with earlier suspected North Korean crypto thefts.

TraderTraitor is associated with North Korea’s wider cybercrime operations, which have targeted cryptocurrency platforms and other digital asset businesses. However, the attribution remains an assessment by blockchain intelligence firms rather than a confirmed law-enforcement finding.

Binance Suspends Withdrawals as Crypto Markets React

Following the incident, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while it secured its wallet infrastructure and investigated the breach.

The exchange said deposits remained unaffected. It also expected withdrawal services to resume within approximately 48 hours, subject to the completion of security checks.

The news also affected cryptocurrency prices. Bitcoin fell to a six-week low, while Ethereum reached a two-month low. Binance’s BNB token also declined as investors reacted to the scale of the incident.

The market reaction reflects wider concerns about the security of centralised exchanges. These platforms hold large amounts of customer assets, making their wallet infrastructure an attractive target for sophisticated attackers.

Binance Heist Surpasses Previous Crypto Theft Records

If the estimated impact is confirmed, the Binance incident would surpass the February 2025 Bybit hack as the largest known cryptocurrency theft.

Hackers stole approximately $1.5 billion from Bybit in that attack. US authorities attributed the incident to North Korean hackers.

The estimated $6.3 billion impact at Binance is more than four times that amount. It also highlights the growing scale and sophistication of attacks targeting major crypto platforms.

For the wider industry, the incident raises questions about internal access controls, transaction approval systems and the security of exchange infrastructure.

Although Binance says customer funds are safe, the investigation will need to establish how attackers gained access, how they authorised the transactions and whether the exchange’s security measures can prevent similar incidents.

The exchange has pledged to cover all losses and provide a technical account of what happened once its investigation is complete.
