Bitcoin Events is counting down to the 8th edition of CryptoFest 2026, scheduled for November 20 at Workshop17 Watershed, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa.
As Cape Town’s premier annual Web3 event, CryptoFest will bring together innovators, industry leaders, and blockchain enthusiasts at a time when institutional interest in digital assets is growing, security incidents are testing confidence across the industry, and regulators face increasing pressure to keep pace with technological developments.
CryptoFest 2026: Event Details
- Date: November 20, 2026
- Venue: Workshop17 Watershed, V&A Waterfront
- Location: Cape Town, South Africa
- Edition: 8th annual CryptoFest
The full-day programme will feature panel discussions, expert-led sessions and networking opportunities, structured around four key themes.
Four key themes at CryptoFest 2026
1. Decentralised Intelligence: The Convergence of AI, Web3 and Data
This stream will explore how artificial intelligence and on-chain data can work together, including a session examining why businesses may not yet be ready for the AI capabilities many executives are seeking.
2. Autonomous Finance: AI Agents with Wallets
As AI agents become increasingly capable of executing financial activities, this stream will examine what happens when autonomous systems can trade, make payments and invest. Discussions will also address the financial crime and regulatory questions that emerge from this development.
3. Digital Identity in Web3: Ownership, Privacy and Access
The programme will examine the role of portable digital identities in Web3 and whether decentralised technologies can give individuals greater control over their personal data.
4. Crypto Meets Central Banking: The Institutional Shift
This stream will focus on stablecoins, banking risk management, South African crypto regulation and the growing relationship between digital assets and traditional capital markets.
Why CryptoFest 2026 Matters
The 2026 programme comes at a time when developments across payments, cybersecurity and institutional finance are reshaping the digital-asset industry.
Stablecoins are moving into everyday payments
Stablecoin adoption in Africa is increasingly moving beyond crypto-native transactions towards everyday commerce.
In an interview published by The Paypers on October 21, 2026, Lewis Nurcombe, Chief Revenue Officer at WalletConnect, discussed the introduction of stablecoin payments in South Africa through Ezeebit, beginning with hotel group The Capital.
The arrangement allows guests to pay using stablecoins, including USDC and USDT, while merchants can settle instantly in stablecoins or fiat currencies.
“The long-term goal is to make paying with a stablecoin anywhere in Africa as easy as paying with a card,” Nurcombe said.
The interview also noted that on-chain activity in Sub-Saharan Africa grew by 52% over the past year.
CryptoFest will explore this shift through the panel discussion, “The Stablecoin Revolution: Is Crypto Finally Becoming Money?”

Security is becoming a priority for institutional adoption
Recent incidents have highlighted the importance of security across the digital-asset ecosystem.
In August, a reported random-number-generation firmware flaw affecting certain Coldcard hardware wallets was linked to bitcoin losses. In September, South African investment platform EasyEquities warned customers that a third-party verification provider may have compromised personal information, while stating that its own trading and investing systems were not affected.
More recently, Binance confirmed a security incident, suspended withdrawals on multiple networks, and stated that user funds were safe while investigations continued. Reports have placed the potential losses in the billions of dollars.
These developments have brought custody, third-party risk management, and operational security further into the spotlight.
CryptoFest 2026 will address these concerns through sessions including “Can Traditional Banking Risk Management Survive Web3?”, featuring Mfundo Mbambo, and “Financial Crime & Regulation in the Agentic Economy.”
Institutional demand is growing as regulators work to keep pace
Institutional interest in digital assets continues to increase.
Fireblocks’ Financial Grid report, which surveyed more than 600 senior bank and corporate decision-makers, found that 88% had committed or planned to commit budget to digital-asset infrastructure in 2026, although only 16% had reached production.
In South Africa, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority had approved 310 crypto asset service providers by March 31, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Bank for International Settlements estimates the stablecoin market at approximately $320 billion and has argued that stablecoins fall short of the requirements of money, proposing a tokenised unified ledger anchored in central bank money.
As institutional capital enters the sector and new payment infrastructure develops, regulators face increasing pressure to adapt their frameworks.
Lerato Lamola, Partner at Webber Wentzel, will examine these developments in “The Future of Crypto Regulation in South Africa: Understanding the COFI Bill.” The session will explore regulatory questions shaping the environment in which digital-asset businesses operate.
