LAGOS, Nigeria — Decentralized Nigeria 2.0 brought Nigeria’s Web3 ecosystem together at the MUSON Centre in Lagos on Saturday, Aug. 15, with industry discussions giving way to the inaugural Decentralized Nigeria Awards, which recognised companies and individuals working across the country’s digital asset sector.

The second edition of the conference brought together blockchain and crypto companies, founders, community builders, lawyers, educators and other participants from the Nigerian Web3 ecosystem.

But beyond the panels and networking, this year’s gathering introduced a new element: an awards programme designed to recognise some of the organisations and people contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s blockchain and digital asset industry.

The result was an event that moved beyond simply discussing the future of Web3 to putting some of the people building that future directly in the spotlight.

    From industry conversations to recognition

Nigeria has developed one of Africa’s most active cryptocurrency communities, with local exchanges, payment companies, stablecoin projects, developers and Web3 communities operating alongside international platforms.

Decentralized Nigeria 2.0 reflected the breadth of that ecosystem.

The conference provided a platform for conversations among different parts of the industry, while the awards offered a snapshot of the organisations and individuals that organisers believe are making notable contributions.

    That distinction is important.

As the African digital asset industry develops, recognition is increasingly extending beyond cryptocurrency trading to include payments, stablecoins, compliance, security, legal services, community building, media and advocacy.

The award categories at Decentralized Nigeria 2.0 reflected that wider definition of the industry.

Local and international crypto platforms recognised

Several major cryptocurrency platforms received awards during the inaugural ceremony.

Binance was named P2P Exchange Platform of the Year, while Busha received the Fast-Rising Exchange Platform of the Year award.

The cNGN project was recognised as Indigenous Stablecoin Platform of the Year, while Luno received Iconic Exchange Platform of the Year. Quidax was recognised as Exchange Platform Supporting Industry/Government, and Roqqu received Indigenous Crypto Platform of the Year.

The awards also recognised international players.

Blockchain.com received the Iconic International Crypto Exchange Award, while Superteam was named Innovative Web3 Community of the Year. Infusion Lawyers received the Law Firm Supporting Web3/Crypto Ecosystem award.

Other organisational awardees included Channels TV, which received Media Platform of the Year, A&D Forensics, recognised as Forensic/Security Platform of the Year, and Boundless Pay, which received the Resilience Excellence Award.

The Digital Asset Traders Association of Nigeria was named Digital Asset Community of the Year.

Together, the categories highlight how much the Nigerian Web3 conversation has expanded beyond exchanges and trading platforms.

Builders and industry personalities take centre stage

The individual awards focused on people working across entrepreneurship, law, community development, leadership, marketing, advocacy and other areas of the ecosystem.

Adedeji Owonibi received Web3 Entrepreneur of the Year, while Senator Ihenyen was named Blockchain Lawyer of the Year.

Tola Fadugbagbe received the Outstanding Web3 Community Builder Award, and Owenize Odia was recognised as Outstanding Female Web3 Leader.

Franklin Peters received Web3 Leader of the Year, while Vindicated Chidi was named Emerging Web3 Leader.

Dr. Harry Obi received Web3 Marketing Personality of the Year, while Nnamdi Okeke was recognised as OTC Personality of the Year.

Jude Ozinegbe received the Web3 Advocacy Champion of the Year award.

Hon. Francis Ejiroghene Waive was recognised as Keynote Speaker and Distinguished Guest of Honour.

The awards also recognised journalism’s role in documenting the sector, with Ladi Williams receiving the Most Outstanding Journalist of the Year award.

What the awards say about Nigeria’s Web3 industry

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the awards is not any individual winner, but the range of categories themselves.

The list includes exchanges, a stablecoin, a payment company, a forensic and security platform, a law firm, a community, a media organisation and an industry association.

That breadth offers a useful snapshot of an industry that is becoming increasingly difficult to define simply as “crypto.”

The personality categories tell a similar story.

Entrepreneurs, lawyers, community builders, marketers, advocates and journalists all received recognition alongside industry executives.

It suggests that the infrastructure supporting digital assets is becoming as important to the ecosystem as the assets themselves.

For Nigeria, where Web3 communities have grown rapidly over the past decade, creating platforms that recognise those contributions could also help establish a historical record of the people and companies shaping the sector.

    Decentralized Nigeria’s next challenge

The success of a conference ultimately extends beyond the day itself.

For Decentralized Nigeria, the introduction of an awards programme gives the event another potential role within the ecosystem: creating a recurring benchmark for the companies, communities and individuals contributing to Nigeria’s digital asset economy.

That makes future editions potentially more significant.

The question now is whether the awards can evolve into a credible annual institution whose recognition carries weight across the Nigerian and wider African Web3 ecosystem.

For the second edition, however, the message was clear.

Nigeria’s Web3 industry is no longer represented solely by traders and exchanges. It is an increasingly broad ecosystem of entrepreneurs, infrastructure providers, lawyers, communities, advocates, media organisations and builders.

Decentralized Nigeria 2.0 put many of those builders on one stage — and, for the first time, gave them an awards platform of their own.
